Important Dates to Remember for 8th Grade Students
|Monday, January 11 and Tuesday, January 12||Mrs. Wentroble comes to the Social Studies Classes to give an overview of the scheduling process. Important information will be sent home with students on these days. Absent/virtual students can also view the video presentation posted on Mrs. Wentroble's Google Classroom|

Wednesday, January 20
|Students will input course selections into PowerSchool during their Social Studies classes with Mrs. Wentroble. Students need to bring with them their Scheduling Sheet already filled out (on paper or digitally) and their student PowerSchool access codes. If students do not know their PowerSchool Access codes, we will have a copy printed out for them as well.|

Monday, February 8 to Friday, May 28
|Students will be permitted to change a course selection for the high school by obtaining a copy of the schedule change form (located outside of Mrs. Wentroble’s office), completing the form, and returning it to Mrs. Wentroble. A parent signature is required for a schedule to be changed. Parents can also email Mrs. Wentroble any course request changes. Please remember that NO schedule changes will be permitted after the last day of school.|

CAUGHT BEING KIND
In an effort to promote kindness at Penn Middle, we will be starting our “Caught Being Kind” initiative again! We want to encourage kindness among the students and staff at school and outside of school. There is a "Caught Being Kind" wall located by the elevator on the first floor. If students/teachers notice someone doing something kind for someone else, they will write it down on our “Caught Being Kind” cards and hang it on the wall. These cards are located all over the school. At the end of each week, a “Caught Being Kind” card will be chosen to be featured on the morning announcements. This student will be our "Warrior of the Week." Not every kind act will be recognized, but it is a good way to start spreading kindness around the school. Our goal is to completely fill the wall with kindness this year!

What is the Student Assistance Program (S.A.P.)?
The Student Assistant Program is comprised of trained school professionals (counselors, teachers, and administrators) who receive referrals from parents, teachers, students, and other school staff. This team works closely with outside agencies to help you access school and community services.

How Does My Child Become Involved in the Program?
Penn Middle School's SAP team will help you find services and assistance within the school and, if needed, in the community. We do not diagnose, treat, or refer your child for treatment. Rather, we will provide you with information; you make the choices. Remember, you are part of our team. Our goal is to help your child succeed in school.
Students come to the SAP team in different ways. Anyone can refer a student to the Student Assistance Program. Some students are referred by teachers and other school personnel. Any school staff member, a student's friend or family member can let the SAP team know that they are worried about someone. The students themselves can even go directly to the SAP team to ask for help. However, the SAP team will not become involved unless we receive parent permission.

ANTI-BULLYING, ANTI-DRUG, AND MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS
6th grade students will be discussing bully prevention topics in their Social Studies class. Some of the topics to be discussed are cyber bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, friendships, and respect. We will be utilizing the Olweus Bullying Program. All students will view anti-bullying assemblies as well.
6th grade students will also be taught an anger management and anti-bullying program called Seeing Red in their Social Studies classes. This curriculum is designed to help middle school aged students better understand their anger so that that they can make healthy and successful choices and build strong relationships. There is an anti-bullying component that touches on cyber bullying and social media, which is a huge issue for our growing youth as they start navigating the use of smart phones, snap-chat, and using social media both in and outside of school as a way of including and excluding each other. This program helps to build an awareness and a sensitivity to prevent these situations from occurring and to provide a vocabulary to give youth a way to express their feelings when needed. All students will view mental health assemblies as well.
All students will be presented the St. Vincent Prevention Projects "Project Alert" and "Too Good for Drugs and Violence" lessons and boosters. 6th grade students will be presented the lessons in their Social Studies classes, while 7th and 8th grade lessons will take place in their Art and Phys Ed classes. All students will view anti-drug assemblies as well.
